20.01.2010 Latvia Finds Unauthorised Antioxidant in Ukrainian-Made Sauces

According to the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service (PVD), two brands of mayonnaise (Provans and Apetytniy) and French Mustard Sauce made by Chumak contained E386, which is permitted in Ukraine but not authorised for use in food production in the EU.

The PVD asked Kondis, the Latvian distributor of the products, to withdraw them from stores. It is also understood that 3.5 tons of the products are still stored in a warehouse.

E 386, also known as Disodium ethylene diamine tetra-acetate (EDTA), is an anti-oxidant and preservative that may cause irritation of the skin, eyes, respiratory and digestive tracts in consumers, in particular children.
